School Travel Planning & Smart Trips Art
|
Smart Trip Art was a collaboration between Raymer Elementary PAC and Michael Kittmer, the Active Transportation Coordinator for City of Kelowna. Teachers had students do the art on 11x17 sheets and the theme/ focus for this art project was school zone safety and active transportation. 7 PAC members (parents) chose by vote from the selection of art that was submitted anonymously by students. The selected student art was then produced into signs and installed on school fences along Raymer Ave, Richter Ave and Tutt St. This is part of parents (PAC) ongoing efforts to improve and address the unique challenges that our school is faced with in regards to traffic safety. The City of Kelowna paid the production cost of 6 signs, Thank you so much!

SCHOOL TRAVEL PLANNING
From this Smart Trip Art evolved the opportunity to be involved in the School Travel Planning initiative. Raymer was selected to be invited to to participate in an in-depth active and safe routes program called School Travel Planning (STP) that will help more children walk and cycle to school. School Travel Planning has had much success in increasing children’s physical and mental fitness and reducing traffic congestion and emissions at schools across Canada.
STP family survey went home May 8th, 2015 and we had about 30% of Families return their surveys. Thank you to the parents who took a few minutes of their time to complete that survey. There was a follow up Family survey that went home April 2016.
Special Thank you to Nancy Moro Castro (City of Kelowna) and Dave Gibson (SD23 Traffic Safety Officer) for giving our Raymer students those amazing prizes!
Thank you everyone that shared their concerns so that we could determine the barriers preventing children from walking and cycling to and from our school. These concerns are vital and have been shared with:
-engineers and professionals from the City of Kelowna,
-the Sustainable Transportation Partnership of the Central Okanagan,
-School District 23,
-Interior Health
-RCMP
The STP parent committee is currently in the planning and action phase and we are working with these organizations and with their help our school is going to benefit from their support and advice, so that we can affect big-picture changes to our neighbourhood.
If you want to participate and/or collaborate with ideas in this exciting program contact Deannie Zahara at [email protected]
